Which type of yacht suits you?

Gulet

The classic wooden Turkish yacht with a broad deck — the boat people picture when they hear "blue cruise". Deck space is the point: twelve people can sit down together and a proper table can be laid. It is slow, but the plan was never to cover distance; it was to anchor in a bay and spend the day there. The right answer for large families, groups of friends and celebrations.

Weak spot: speed. If you want to see many bays in one day, a gulet will hold you back.

Motor yacht

Built around speed and interior comfort: air-conditioned saloon, larger cabins, and on most of them a locker full of water toys. Leaving Göcek, seeing Ölüdeniz and getting back within a day is only realistic on a motor yacht. On short trips of two or three days, this is the type that shows you the most coastline.

Weak spot: fuel. Every fast mile shows up in the budget, so if you plan to sit in one bay you are paying for capability you won't use.

Sailing yacht

The cheapest and the quietest option. With the engine off there is nothing but water noise, which for some guests is the entire reason for the trip. Fuel is almost a non-item. Ideal for couples and small groups.

Weak spot: space and heel. Cabins are tight and the boat leans under sail, which can be hard work for guests prone to seasickness or with limited mobility.

Catamaran

Two hulls mean almost no heel and a very wide deck. Its shallow draft is a real advantage in Göcek's bays — it can tuck in closer to shore than most monohulls. The most comfortable option on the route for families with small children and for anyone who worries about motion.

Weak spot: marina fees. Two hulls take up more space, so berthing costs more than a monohull of the same length.

A quick decision tree

   How many of you are there?

   Over ten, and a gulet is effectively the only sensible option. Four to six, and a sailing yacht or catamaran will ease the budget considerably.

2. 02

   How many days?

   Two to three days: motor yacht, so you see more. A full week: gulet or sailing yacht, where the slower pace is the point.

3. 03

   Children or anyone prone to seasickness?

   Then catamaran or gulet — both sit far more steadily than a sailing yacht.

4. 04

   Budget or comfort?

   Budget → sailing yacht. Comfort → motor yacht. Somewhere in between, with room to socialise → gulet.
